Abstract

The aims of this research are getting a description about the student's ability in using quantitative analytical approach and any kinds of mistakes in solving physics problems. The population of this research is the students who are taking an examination for Basic Physics courses at FMIPA UNY on semester January-June and July-December 2001. There are 100 studenty selected at random as samples. The data collecting method is an essay test that was used for Basic Physics courses examination. The student's ability in using quantitative analytical approach and the mistakes made in solving on the test are identified through answer sheets. Based on the findings of this research, it wasfound that most of the students (almost 60%) of FMIPA UNY has a poorabiliry in using quantitative analytical approach. Their ability on problem analysis generally is not good and some mistakes made are as consequence the lack of their physics knowledge.
