Abstract
This research study aims to describe sociolinguistic phenomenon in the Hybrid Javanese Kitabi in the Madurese manuscript as a language monument. The study only describes the text of Careta Qiyamat linguistically, one aspect of the manuscript to understand the transformation of the Javanese literary episteme in the Madurese mind-set among the santris. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to collect the linguistic data in the Madurese manuscript. The data were the Madurese tembang macapat in three genres (i) puh kasmaradana, (ii) puh durma, and (iii) puh artate. The data were collected by reading the text and writing down the linguistic evidences descriptively. The study reveals the following findings. First, there are many words of the Madurese dialect in the Javanese-Kitabi manuscript which were originally written in Madura in the eighteenth century. Second, there is a code mixing in the text through the process of substitution of the Javanese affix with the Madurese affix, such as the affix /nga/which becomes la/in the text.
