Abstract
Issues dealing with Indonesian loan words from Arabic at least can be explored from three main aspects, namely, phonology, morphology, and semantics. This article, however, only focuseson a semantic aspect, specifying the differences in meaning between Indonesian loan words from Arabic and their originals. There were 400 Indonesian loan words treated as data, which were borrowed from Arabic. Eighty of them were found to have differences in meaning compared to the Arabic original forms. Based on the analysis, three types of themeaning differenceswere identified. The first type, involving 18 loan words, was a widening process due to the formation of new concepts. The second type, involving 30 loan words, was a narrowing process because of patterns ofhyponyms or choices of homonyms. The remaining 32 loan words indicated that they changedtotally inmeaning fromtheirArabicoriginals.
