Abstract

Government is linguistic element, which influences the morphological form of governed words including nouns. The German nouns have various forms in accordance with their cases in order to show their roles of the syntactic functions that they play. Case forms are represented morphologically in the case markers and influenced by government. In German, the linguistic elements which potential to be government are (1) verbs, (2) adjectives, (3) prepositions, and (4) joint elements which consists of (a) verb and preposition, (b) adjective and preposition, and (c) noun and preposition. The case marker of nouns lies on the determiner, and of pronouns lies on their form according to the declination. Nouns with the subject function have nominative cases and are not influenced by the government. As a result there are no changes of form of these nouns. Nouns with the other syntactic functions will have accusative, dative, or genitive case. These types of noun are determined by the government and affect the change of the noun form.
