Abstract
The application of the competency-based curriculum has as its starting point a set of competencies students are to possess in their fields of study. The competencies are defined through a process of determining the standards for those competencies, certain basic competencies, a particular syllabus development, and an evaluation system based on the basic competencies. The standards indicate the limitation and direction of the competencies students are to master and be able to use after undergoing a teaching-learning process. The basic competencies indicate the minimum levels of the competencies students are to master and they are derived directly from the standards decided for the competencies. Learning achievement evaluation based on basic competencies is conducted by means of a system of continuous evaluation, meaning that test items should be made for all learning achievement indicators and the results of the evaluation are analyzed to determine what basic competencies have or have not been mastered by students. Emphasis is on the importance of process evaluation. In the teaching of literature, evaluation of the literary learning can be of a high, moderate, or low appreciative content. The competency-based curriculum, however, demands a literary test emphasizing evaluation with a high appreciative content. The main types of evaluation on literary learning are the cognitive competence test, the performance test, and the portfolio. The literary performance test involves all the four language skills, namely, listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Thus, it also indirectly measures the language skills. In addition, an affective inventorymeasurement shouldalso be done to investigate students' attitude, interest, and motivation in relation with a particular subject.
