Abstract

IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH COMMUNICATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP N 4 SRAGEN IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2011/2012 Helinda Jasinthawati NIM 07202244106 ABSTRACT The objective of the research was to improve the students’ speaking skill through communicative activities. This research was held in SMP N 4 Sragen from April to May 2012. The subjects of the research were the students of class VII A in SMP N 4 Sragen that consisted of 24 students. This research is action research in nature. The researcher conducted the research collaboratively with the English teacher of class VII A. The data were collected through giving the pre-test and the post-test, questionnaire, observations and interviews with the students and the English teacher, photographs and doing the research procedure (reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and evaluation and reflection). The instruments of the research were the questionnaire, observation checklist, interview checklist, pretest and post-test, and camera. This research used descriptive qualitative analysis technique which was supported by quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process and interviewing the English teacher and the students of class VII A. The qualitative data were in the forms of field notes and interview transcripts that were analyzed based on the qualitative data analysis. While the quantitative data were obtained by giving the pre-test, progress test and post-test to measure the students’ speaking performance. The quantitative data were in the forms of the students’ speaking performance scores. The findings showed that the use of communicative activities in this research successfully improved the students’ speaking skills. The improvements covered: 1) the students started to speak English during the teaching and learning process, 2) the students could contribute in the speaking activities, 3) the students’ motivation, involvement and self confidence to speak English also improved, and 4) and there was an improvement in the students' pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and fluency in speaking English. The result of the students’ speaking skill can also be seen from the score of the students’ speaking performance. The students’ speaking performance was scored in the pre-test, progress test and posttest. In the pre-test, progress test and post-test, they were scored by performing speaking individually. The average score of the students’ speaking skill in the pretest was 49.25, in the progress test of Cycle 1 was 60.50, and in the post-test was 82.25.
