Abstract

The study investigated lexicogrammatical errors made by Akbid Muhammadyah students, the causal factors of their occurrence, and implications for English language education. The objectives of this research are to describe (1) the lexicogrammatical errors at the sentence, phrase, word, and morpheme ranks in written language, and (2) the causal factors of the errors. This research was descriptive qualitative. It described the lexicogrammatical errors that occurred in student’s writing, and the factors why the students made the lexicogrammatical errors, and at the end what the implications for English language education there. The analysis unit of this research was the sentence. The quality of the sentences was analyzed and clarified by analyzing the errors in the other ranks of lexicogrammatical units. The data were collected by asking the students to make essays in certain topics and through interviews. The instruments of this research were the researcher, writing assignment sheets, classification of errors sheet, and the interviews guidelines. The findings show that from the writing of 20 students (1) there are 8 error types of lexicogrammatical errors at the sentence rank: omission of the subjects, omission of the predicates, misformation of the subjects, misformation of the predicates, misformation of the objects, misformation of the complements, misformation of the adverbs, and misordering of the subjects. (2) There are 4 causal factors of the lexicogrammatical errors made by students, they were: pressure to perform, student’s method in doing the task, lack of vocabulary knowledge, and ignorance of rule restriction. The major type of the lexicogrammatical errors made by Akbid Muhammadiyah Sampit students is the misformation of the predicates. It occurred 276 times in students writing from total of the errors. The major causal factor of the lexicogrammatical errors made by Akbid Muhammadiyah Sampit students is the lack of vocabulary knowledge. It is related to the meaning and the use of the words.
