Abstract

This research aimed to find out the continuities and changes of Vastusastra in the building of joglo Yogyakarta, including: the choosing of site, the orientation of the building, the fundamental shape of the building, the configuration of rooms, the aplication of Meru, the determining of the sacred centre and the cosmological concept. The approach of this research is qualitative and the samples are the original joglos in the regions of Kotagede, Pleret and Kraton. The samples maintained by purpossive sampling technic. The datas which collected by literature study, observation, and interview then be identified, classified, selected, analysed and interpretated to find out the continuity and change of Vastusastra in the building of joglo Yogyakarta. The result of this research showed that the continuities of Vastusastra found in the choosing of site, the determining of fundamental shape of building and the sacred centre, the aplication of Meru, and the cosmological concept of joglo Yogyakarta. The continuities of Vastusastra in the joglo Yogyakarta building based on the assumption that the influence of Indian culture were easily accepted by the Javaneese who had been in the prehistoric era at that time. Indian culture with its Hinduis religion had a homogenity with the ancient Java culture which had dinamism and animism beliefs before. The changes showed just only in the determining of the building orientation and the rooms configuration. This changes happened because some of the important aspects from India then developing and resulting new forms of ancient Java culture. These attainments confessed as a creativity result of the ancient Javaneese culture itself and it matched with the geographic conditions. Thus, most of the elements of the infuence of Indian culture, those are the basic concepts of religion, are still continue and exist in the building of joglo Yogyakarta. Keywords: Vastusastra, joglo Yogyakarta, continuities and changes
