Abstract

This research aims to evaluate the implementation of population education in Senior High School SMAN 5 Yogyakarta in terms of (1) learning process, (2) materials in learning process (3) evaluation, (4) course outcome, (5) teachers’role, (6)perception on population education, (7) factors which are favorable and factors which are constraints to population education. This study used the quantitative research approach supported by qualitative data. The research subjects comprised principals, teachers and students. They were selected by means of the purposive sampling techniques. The data were collected trough questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The data were analysed as follow: quantitative data from students’ survey were analysed with descriptive statistic. They were confronted to the qualitative data in order to make reduction, summary and draw conclusion. The study reveals following findings. (a) The teaching process of population education is less appropriate in class XI. It falls into “sometimes category” with the mean score of 29.6. (b) Materials for population education in Senior High School SMAN 5 are available and effecient. Materials in populaton education are located in “often category” with the mean score of 14.17. (c) The evaluation in population education is less appropriate. It fall into “sometimes category” with a mean score of 11.52. The population education items that are included in the evaluation are not enough. (d) The population education outcome is high. It is located in “agree category” with the average score of 17.70. The students are aware of, responsible for, and disciplined about population issues nawadays. (e) The role of the teacher in population education is in “near to appropriate” category with the index of 0.87. The students are satisfied with the role of teachers in population education class. The teachers are concerned with population education and are professional and play their role well in class. (f)The students’ perception of population education is very positive. It is in “strongly agree category” with the mean score of 27.38. (g) The constraints in population education include limitation in time, many extra curricular activities, rapid change of data, and validity of materials.
