Abstract

This study was aimed at exploring and describing the management of the school principal in the teaching and learning processes at vocational high school in Indonesia. The framework of the research study was formulated around the aspects of the school and classroom climate, involvement and perception of parents and school committee, students’ motivation and attention, and equipment, teachers’ management in teaching, and the use of facilities. Qualitative approach was used to describe and analyze the planning and controlling of the teaching and learning processes at SMK N 2 Depok Sleman. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, and interview from thirty students, twenty teachers, one principal, two vice principals at this school, and five parents whose children were studying at this school. The finding shows that the school principal’s management in term of planning and controlling of the teaching and learning processes in vocational high school has been performed well in several ways, whereas some aspects of the performance still need improving to motivate the students for their learning. The school principal’s management process is considered good. The teacher’s performances are almost perfect. All students’ competency was qualified enough. But the students’ parents were not highly committed and involved in supporting their children’s learning except the monthly payment for their children schooling. The school committee has trusted in schooling since they perceived that schooling does not cost lots of money. The school principal management is good like this because the school principal has made the planning and controlling of the teaching and learning processes regularly, and has also made more contracts with the students’ parents. All the teachers do the best in their tasks. The students have high competency. The parents monitored their children’s learning processes regularly, and have the close relationship with the school. The school committee also monitors in the students’ schooling. The school principal should use the result of evaluation to select yearly teachers and provides them with either prizes or merit certificates.
