Abstract

This research is a development research of instructional media in the field of chemistry education. The purpose of this development research is to develop an audio-visual medium on “chemicals in food” in junior high schools (SMP) of grade VIII and to know the quality of the audio-visual medium meeting media quality criteria specified. Development of the audio-visual medium was guided by the two consultants and gained input from media experts and peer reviewers. The research instrument was in the forms of questionnaires which contained specific aspects and criteria. Assessments were carried out by 5 science teachers of SMP in the area of Temanggung. The assessments were conducted on the five aspects with 25 indicators. The assessment results were in the qualitative data converted into quantitative data, then tabulated and analyzed with guidance of ideal rating category criteria to determine the quality of the audio-visual medium. This research product was in the forms of an audio-visual medium which was an audio-visual medium CD on “chemicals in food”. The medium components comprised instructions for using the medium, standards of competence and basic competence, materials, testing, evaluation, and profile. Based on the assessments of the science teachers, the audio-visual medium had a good quality (B) with an average score of 99.4 in the score range from 83.36 to 100.05. Therefore, the audio-visual medium can be used as an independent instructional medium for SMP students of grade VIII.
