Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research was intended to describe the implementation of the genre-based approach in the teaching writing learning process in the senior high school. The issue investigated washow the genre-based approach was implemented, including the teacher’s understanding of genre-based approach. The data were collected through classroom observations and interview. The teaching learning process was video recorded. It was done in three classes with one teacher. The interview was conducted both in order to examine the reasons behind the activities that the teacher did during the teaching learning process and in order to find out the teacher’s understandings of the genre-based approach. The data were transcribed, read and re-read, and then analyzed. The findings showed that (1)the teacher understood what is meant by genre and genre-based approach, (2)the teacher applied the four stages of teaching learning process in the genre-based approach,and (3)the teacher gave feedback to the students’ writing both during and after the teaching and learning process.
