Abstract

This study aims to improve the speaking learning process using a simulation technique of grade X students of MAAI Mertapada Cirebon and to explain: (a) The appropriate learning activities in a simulation technique, (b) the appropriate input of learning in a simulation technique, (c) The appropriate teacher’s role in a simulation technique, and (d) The appropriate students’ role in a simulation technique. This study was action research which was done in three cycles, each cycle consisting of three meetings. The research subjects comprised of an English teacher and 30 students of class X B consisted of 12 male and 18 female students. They were selected because they had the lowest score in speaking skill based on pre-research. The research was conducted in February to May 2015, in the second semester of 2014/2015 academic year. The data were collected through observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were obtained from the observation and analyzed by data reduction, data display and conclusion, while the quantitative data were obtained from the students’ learning outcomes based on the pre-test and post-test and analyzed by comparing the students’ speaking skill before and after the action. The study revealed four findings. First, the approriate learning activities in a simulation technique of grade X B MAAI Mertapada were (1) challenging and fun activities, (2) kept the students speaking, (3) participation was even, (3) pairs and groups activities, and (4) clear instructions. Second, the appropriate input of learning in a simulation technique of grade X B MAAI Mertapada were (1) interesting topics, and (2) the teacher used understandable language. Third, the appropriate teacher’s roles in a simulation technique of grade X B MAAI Mertapada were the roles as: (1) a general overseer, (2) a classroom manager, (3) a language instructor, (4) consultant or advisor, (5) co-communicator, (6) helping learners to find ideas, and (7) developing the students’ confidence. Fourth, the appropriate students’ roles in a simulation technique of grade X B MAAI Mertapada were (1) the students was fully engaged, (2) the students communicated their thoughts and feeling, (3) they expressed their opinions in a variety of contexts, (4) they spoke a lot in speaking learning process, (5) they were eager to speak in the classroom, (6) they developed their fluency, grammatical competence, discourse competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence. In addition, the students’ speaking ability improved. It was proven by the mean score of each cycle improved. The mean score of pretest was 47. In the post-test 1 by applying a simulation technique had enhanced 8.3 points or being 55.3. In the post test 2, the value had enhanced 9.7 points or to the average value being 65, while in the post test 3, the value had enhanced 12.5 points or to the average of 77.5. Based on the speaking learning process and the students’ speaking ability, it was concluded that a simulation technique improved the speaking learning process of grade X B of MAAI Mertapada Cirebon
