Abstract

This study aims at determining (1) effects of various surface areas towards phosphate ion adsorption in goethit and alumina adsorbents, (2) effects of system pH towards phosphate ion adsorption by various surface areas in goethit and alumina adsorbents, and (3) comparison on the adsorption capacity of the phosphate ion between goethit and alumina adsorbents. Before using goethit and alumina adsorbents in this reserach, there were some analyses done including an analysis of surface areameters to determine a specific surface area and XRD and IR analysis used to determine the adsorbent purity. In determining the phosphate ion adsorption, three experiments were conducted. The first experiment was the edge adsorption process conducted using adsorbent concentrations of 25, 50, and 100m2/L at pH ranges of 3 to 10 with the phosphate concentration of 0.001 M conducted at the temperature of 30°C. The second one was the adsorption kinetics process conducted at the surface area of 25 m2/L using a maximum pH at the time of 5 to 2910 minutes and at the temperature of 30°C. The last experiment was the desorption kinetics process conducted at the surface area of 25 m2/L using pH increased to the maximum pH, then, decreased to the minimum pH at the time of 5 to 2910 minutes and at the temperature of 30°C. Percent (%) of phosphate ion adsorption was determined by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer and the adsorbed phosphate identification using IR spectrophotometer. The comparison of phosphate ion adsorption percent of goethit and alumina adsorbents was analyzed by using Quantitative method with the t-test. The research results showed that various surface areas on phosphate ion adsorptions by goethit and alumina adsorbents i.e. the maximum percentage of the adsorbed phosphate was equal to the surface area in the research, system pH influenced on the phosphate ion adsorption by goethit and alumina sorbents, and the % comparison of the phosphate ion adsorption between goethit and alumina sorbents in the experiments of edge adsorption, kinetics adsorption, and kinetics desorption showed significant differences meaning that there was % difference on the phosphate ion adsorption between goethit and alumina sorbents
