Abstract

Economic empowerment is one of the main problems faced by developing nations. Many programs planned and runs by the governments seem not enough to reduce the number of poverty. One of the ways to gain the better economic empowerment is by using many programs provided by some philanthropic organizations. As many other developing countries, Indonesia’s NGOs also have their programs to empower its society. The raising numbers of Islamic Philanthropic NGOs bring the new horizons for Indonesian people to earn a better economic level. The potential of these islamic-based philanthropic activities can be seen by their practice to mobilize people’s money through zakat and use it to develop many kinds of programs. Instead of giving the poor cash money or food, these Islamic Philanthropic NGOs give various programs to empower people’s economy. This paper will not only describe the characteristics of Islamic philanthropy, but also giving explanations about their potentials to decrease the level of poverty by bringing economic empowerment programs to the Indonesian society. Keywords : Islamic Philanthropy, Economic Empowerment, Indonesia, Zakat
