Abstract

This research aims to: (1) describe the implementation of learning tasks in the When English Rings a Bell textbook viewed from task components: goal, input, activity, learner role, teacher role, and setting; and (2) reveal the strengths and the weaknesses of the implementation of learning tasks. This research was a descriptive qualitative research employing a descriptive and qualitative method of analysis. The research was conducted at MTs. Negeri Wonosari. The subjects were an English teacher and 55 students of VII A and VII F of MTs. Negeri Wonosari in the academic year of 2014/2015. The objects of the research were the learning tasks in the When English Rings a Bell textbook (Chapters VIII and IX). The data were collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis. The research instruments included the researcher, observation sheets, questionnaires, an interview guide, and documents. The data were in the form of observation fieldnotes of teaching-learning process, interview transcripts, results of the questionnaires, and documents (book, syllabi, and lesson plans) dealing with the implementation of learning tasks in the When English Rings a Bell. The researcher analyzed the data, chose the data, and sharpened the research focus. The validity of the data was gained through a triangulation technique by comparing data sources. The findings of the research are as follows. (1) The goal of tasks in Chapters VIII and IX is that the students can develop their vocabulary mastery, and make a simple description of people, animals, and things around them. (2) The materials presented are appropriate since the materials are interesting and close to the real world. (3) The activities applied by the teacher are communication strategies, dialogues and role plays, discussions and decisions, questions and answers, and exercises. (4) The students can participate actively in doing the tasks. They can interact and negotiate with their friends or teacher in doing the tasks. (5) The teacher performs his roles as a facilitator, manager, controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer well. (6) The teacher adjusts the material of the lesson with the activity done, whether the tasks are done individually, in pairs, or in groups. The implementation of learning tasks of When English Rings a Bell at MTs. Negeri Wonosari has strengths and weaknesses. The strengths are: (1) the students become more active and critical, and (2) the use of the textbook is optimal; while the weaknesses are: (1) the time allotment is limited, and (2) the teacher has no good preparation in implementing the tasks.
