Abstract

The learning media in the form of comic books are very potential to be used as a learning resource for students. At present, a comic book has not been optimally developed as a learning resource. This study aims to: 1) develop a comic book as a learning resource for the Social Studies subject, and 2) investigate the appropriateness of the comic book as a learning resource for the Social Studies subject based on the evaluation by a materials expert, a media expert, a teacher, and tryouts involving Grade VIII students of the junior high school (JHS). The study employed the research and development (R & D) method by modifying the model by Borg & Gall. The research subjects were Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 14 Yogyakarta. The data collection techniques were a validation questionnaire for a media expert and a materials expert and an evaluation questionnaire for a Social Studies and students. The data analysis technique was the quantitative descriptive technique. The results of the study were as follows. 1) The development of a comic book as a learning resource for the Social Studies subject was made in three stages, namely pre-development, product development, and implementation. The developed comic book was then validated by a materials expert, a media expert, a teacher, and tryouts involving Grade VIII students of JHS. 2) Based on the analysis of the results of the media appropriateness analysis, it was revealed that all aspects of the evaluation by the materials expert, the media expert, the Social Studies teacher, and the tryouts, attained mean scores ranging from 4.23 to 4.7, which were very good. The evaluation by the materials expert yielded a mean score of 4.4, which was very good; the evaluation by the media expert yielded a mean score of 4.24, which was very good; the evaluation by the Social Studies teacher yielded a mean score of 4.7, which was very good; the small-group tryout yielded a mean score of 4.23, which was very good; and the large-group tryout yielded a mean score of 4.4, which was very good. Therefore, the comic book for the theme of the proclamation of Indonesian independence entitled “The Proclamation Moments” was appropriate to be used as a learning resource for the Social Studies subject for Grade VIII students of JHS.
