Abstract

This research aims to discover what supporting factors on English oral competence of students in Kidsstar School Makassar are. Those factors then were limited into some types of pattern interction during teaching and learning process in the classroom, school’s management in supporting and enhancing oral competence of students, and the language environment of the family. In this case study, a qualitative research was used. The data collected by doing interview with the parents of the subjects and observation from the beginning of February to March 2015. Observation was done to see subjects’ interaction during the class, while the interview was conducted to know how parents of the subjects encourage their children to speak English at the very young age. There were three students as the subjects of the research and were chosen by some important points as a consideration such as they were cleverer than other students, were using English asa daily language in their family, and were at the same age. The result of the research shows the pattern of classroom interaction, school’s management and family language environment are indicated to be the supporting factors behind oral competence of students. Interaction during the class assists students to speak English in their normal daily routines stimulate their way of thinking. Teachers seem actively involved in the interaction during the class, they stimulate students by asking questions and giving responses to students. It also aims to build stronger positive relationship between teachers and students. School management facilitates English-direct speaking by using English in their daily language at school and creating English atmosphere in school, while parents maximizes it by doing English interaction at home. Some facilities like providing books, vocabulary posters, buying some DVDs are also done by parents to support their children in actively speaking English.
