Abstract

This study attempts to explore an English class for the students of Animation Design Study Program at Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Arts. This research is aimed at describing the learning process of that class where the teacher’s beliefs about language and language learning, the learning process, and the assessment process can be found out. This research is a case study with descriptive qualitative approach. The research was conducted from September to December 2012 and continued from March to July 2013. The subject of the research was an English teacher at Yogyakarta Polytechnic of Arts who was engaged in teaching English class in Animation Design Study Program. Data of the research include the description of the teacher’s beliefs about language and language learning, the description of the learning process, and the description of how the assessments were administered. Video recorder, field notes, documents, open-ended questions were used to collect data. Descriptive data analysis was employed. In terms of language learning, she holds four beliefs, 1) learning should occur socially and cooperatively among learners, particularly in a foreign language class in which the language level or the language ability of the students is mixed or heterogenous. The students should contribute to the process of each other’s learning, 2) learning a foreign language should involve emotional and affective processes, 3) learning material should be meaningful, important, and relevant to the students’ major field of study, and more importantly, to the development of their competence; therefore, a link between English (as a minor subject) and animation design (as the core subject) should be made, and 4) learning English as a foreign language is a means of getting things done. Second, during two semesters, the students learned general English for communication and project work. The learning activities were sequenced into preliminary phase, controlled/guided learning phase, model presentation phase (for general English for communication) and preliminary phase, model presentation phase, controlled/guided learning phase and final project (for project work). Approaches or methods applied in this study were designed fully to meet animation design students’ needs. The activities reflected the principles of Audio Lingual Method, Communicative Language Teaching, Task-based Language Teaching, Cooperative Learning and other types of activities suit to the students’ needs. Third, the assessments which include
