Abstract

This study was intended to analyze the types of speech acts performed by the English teacher of grade X IBB (Ilmu Budaya dan Bahasa) atSMA N 1 Purworejo during the English teaching and learning process on the basis of Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts and forces. This research applied the descriptive-qualitative approach. More specifically, this was a case study. The main subject of the study was the English teacher. The object of this study was the utterances produced by the teacher during the classroom communication practices. The data were in the forms of words, phrases and utterances produced by the teacher. The researcher played the role as the planner, collector, interpreter and reporter of the research findings. The data were largely collected through observation along with audio-video recording process. In analyzing the data, the researcher adopted Miles and Huberman’s (1994) interactive cyclical framework. The trustworthiness was established by applying credibility, dependability and conformability. The findings show that the teacher performed directives (440 data) with questioning (286 data) as the most frequent illocutionary force during the lesson. Meanwhile, commissives (7 data) appeared to be the least produced illocutionary acts. The use of directives indicates that the teacher still implements the teacher-centered classroom approach. Moreover, she was also aware of the vertical relations between the teacher and the students; thus a certain degree of power was exercised through directives to indicate her authority.
