Abstract

This research aimed at improving the reading comprehension skills of the eleventh grade students at SMK PIRI 2 Yogyakarta who concentrated on fashion in the academic year 2012/2013 through intensive reading. This action research was collaboratively conducted at class XI of SMK PIRI 2 Yogyakarta. The actions were performed in two cycles, namely: implementing intensive reading activities, training the students to use reading techniques and strategies, using power point presentations, audio recordings and multimedia, teaching grammatical points, drilling the students’ pronunciation, and motivating the students. The data were collected through observations, interviews, questionnaires, videos, and photographs. The data were analyzed through interactive models by Miles and Huberman, i.e. data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research outcomes show that the students’ reading comprehension skills improved through the intensive reading activities. There were also improvements in their involvement and motivation. In terms of reading the texts, they used some reading techniques and strategies, such as scanning, skimming, guessing, key words, and dictionaries. They actively followed the reading activities and other classroom activities.
