Abstract

This study is aimed at 1) describing the degrees of readability of idiomatic expressions represented in Doyle’s The Sign of Four as realized in Tanuwidjaja’s Empat Pemburu Harta, and 2) explaining the motivating factors in terms of textual and contextual motivating factors of the results. This study applied a qualitative method for collecting and describing the data. The data were the entire idiomatic expression represented in Doyle’s The Sign of Four as the Source Text and Tanuwidjaja’s Empat Pemburu Harta as the Target Text. The main instruments of the research were five common readers analyzing the data and the researcher herself. The most prominent degree of data A, B, C, D, E ,and F shows that the most prominent degree of readability of idiomatic expressions represented in Doyle’s The Sign of Four as realized in Tanuwidjaja’s Empat Pemburu Harta is possessed by HRD or High Readability Degree which gaining more than 50% of each data. It is motivated by textual and contextual motivating factors. Overall they fulfill the aspect of readability in terms of Translation Quality Assessment although there are several LRD or Low Readability Degree occurrences below 10% in Target Text, but they do not affect the overall degree of readability of the Target Text. Therefore, from those typical features, the researcher determines that Empat Pemburu Harta by Tanuwidjaja is translationally appropriate viewed from the source based point of view and also viewed by Translation Quality Assessment: in terms of the degrees of readability of Idiomatic expressions. In other words, Empat Pemburu Harta by Tanuwidjaja is recommended to be read by the readers in Indonesia.
