Abstract

This research aims at (1) determining the effectiveness of crawl style swimming instructions for the children in the ages of 5 and 7 years, (2) providing inputs as treatment considerations for the children in the ages of 5 and 7 years in swimming instructions, and (3) providing the real understanding on the ability of the children in learning swimming movements. This is an experimental study using swimming skill tests as the data collection method. The populations in this research were the members of Tirta Taruna and Tirta Agung swimming associations who were in the ages of 5 and 7 years. The subjects were 32 children consisting 9 children in the age of 5 and 5 children in the age of 7 from Tirta Agung swimming association, and 7 children in the age of 5 and 11 children in the age of 7 from Tirta Taruna swimming association. The instruments were adopted from the arrangement results of swimming rating scale for S1 students of Coaching Education Department of Faculty of Sport Science, Yogyakarta State University conducted by Samodra (2005). It used the pre and post tests in the form of crawl style swimming through the pool width (15 meters) and provided judge observation to give scores on the effectiveness of the style. The data were analyzed using one-way statistics program of ANAKOVA (SPS-2000). This study results in F = 22.731 with db (1.30) in the significance level of 5% gaining F table of 4.17. The value of F was higher than F table which inferred that there were significant differences between children in the age of 5 and those in the age of 7 in the post tests. Thus, it can be concluded that the crawl style swimming instructions for the children in the age of 7 were more effective than ones for the children in the age of 5.
