Abstract

The objective of this action research study is to improve the reading comprehension ability of the tenth grade students of SMA N 6 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2013/2014 through the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading. This action research was carried out in two cycles which used the steps of reconnaissance, planning, action and observation, and reflection. Preview, click and clunk, get the gist, and wrap up were the steps used in CSR during the research implementation. The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher, the students, and the collaborator. The participants were 30 tenth grade students of class X.5 of SMA N 6 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2013/2014. The data were qualitative and quantitative in nature. The qualitative data were obtained from the interview with the students, the English teacher, and the collaborator and from the classroom observation. The qualitative data were in the form of field notes and interview transcripts. The quantitative data were obtained from the students’ reading comprehension tests. They were in the form of students’ reading scores of the pre-test (Test A) and the post-test (test B). The results of the research are as follows. First, the use of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) improved students’ reading comprehension ability. The students comprehended the reading text easily. The students’ improvement was supported by the progress of their mean score of the pre-test (Test A) and the post-test (Test B). In the pre-test, their mean score was 62.27 while the mean score of the post-test was 83.60. In reference to this, the gain score was 21.33. Second, there were some students’ positive behaviors toward the implementation of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) related to their participation in the class. They were more active than before in every activity, they could find main ideas of the texts, and also could figure out the difficult words. Third, most of students’ positive behaviors were shown by the students toward the implementation of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) related to their interest in joining the activities. They were interested in completing the tasks and reading the English texts.
