Abstract
This research study aims at determining (1) character differences between adolescents active in sports and adolescents inactive in sports; (2) character differences between adolescents who pursue team sports and those who pursue individual sports, and (3) character differences of the adolescents based on kinds of sports they are engaged in. This research study used survey method using A retrospective causal-comparative design (Gay and Airasian, 2002) which compares the adolescents active in sports with the adolescents who do not actively do sports to determine the influence of sport activity on their character development. This research involved 248 adolescents consisting adolescents who actively participated in both individual and team sports and the adolescents who were not actively doing sports in Sleman regency. The sampling technique was purposive sample. Instrument and data collection techniques used "Individual and Team Character in Sport Questionnaire (ITCSQ)" developed by Davidson, Khmelkov, & Mran-Miller (2003). This instrument consisted of 45 items of statements designed to measure the characters associated with the background of sports. The data obtained were analyzed with inferential statistics, namely: A one-way ANOVA; t-tests; using SPSS version 13.00. This results of this study concludes that: (1) there were no differences in characters between adolescents who were active in sports and those who were not; (2) there were no differences between characters of adolescents who were active in sports and those who were not in terms of sportsmanship, responsibility , and concern, but there were some differences in terms of caring, sharing, and group responsibility as well as the character development; and (3) there were differences in character dimensions of the adolescents based on kinds of sports they pursued.
