Abstract

This research study was aimed at developing WebQuests as reading instructional media for the second grade students of SMAN 1 Muntilan. The products were to be used to facilitate the teaching and learning process of reading. The development of WebQuests was carried out through the following three main stages: needs analysis, product development, and tryouts. The needs analysis stage was done through reviewing of literatures, creating need analysis instruments, gathering the data of target needs, and analysing the students’ needs. At the stage of product development, a series of activities were conducted: selecting the basic competencies and standard of competencies, creating the storyboard, developing the initial products, and validating the products to the subject-mater and ICT experts. The tryouts were done twice which were small-scale tryout and large-scale tryout. The small-scale tryout was done to 10 students and the large-scale tryout was done to 30 students. In conducting the tryouts, the researcher had to make the lesson plans in relation to the WebQuests since she had to conduct the teaching and learning processes. The data from the subject-mater experts and field-testing were collected by means of questionnaires and small group discussions. The data of the tryouts gathered from the students were collected by means of questionnaires, documents, and field notes. The researcher used the descriptive data analysis for elaborating the qualitative data. Meanwhile, the quantitative data taken from the questionnaire were analyzed through the descriptive quantitative analysis which was converted to the qualitative data. The result of the data analysis shows that the development WebQuests in terms of content quality can be categorized as good. The ICT’s comments are also placed in the “good” category. Therefore, the WebQuests are good products. The results of the feedback from the students on the tryouts of the application of the product also prove that the products are good. The students are also motivated to learn the materials through the use of WebQuests. Therefore, it can be concluded that the development of WebQuets has achieved its aim in facilitating the reading activities of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Muntilan. The products are also feasible to be accessed by the students both during and out of the class.
