Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to improve the speaking skill of grade VIIIG students of SMP Negeri I Piyungan, Bantul, Yogyakarta in academic year 2013/2014 by using multimedia, film and animation. Beside that this research also aimed to improve the process of teaching and learning. This action research used Kemmis and MC Taggart design, that consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. This research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data of the study consisted of qualitative and quantiative data gathered through observations, interviews, video/ audio recordings, and performance tests. The qualitative data were analyzed using the interactive qualitative data analysis which included: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The quantitative ones was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The reliability of the data was established through methodological triangulation, time triangulation, and investigator triangulation. The learning process were done through modifying the steps of language teaching that led the students’ attention in speaking activities based on their daily life. The result of the study shows that the multimedia can improve the students’ speaking skill, students’ activities, students’ understanding towards the learning materials, and the learning process. The improvement of students’ speaking skill from first cycle to second cycle is indicated by the following; 10% students was in level II, 90% in level III, 0% students in level IV in cycle 1; 0% students in level II, 20% in level IV, 80 % in level V in cycle 2. The average score of students speaking skill in the first cycle is 54.1, but that in the second cycle is 82.445. In conclussion, multimedia use could improve students’ speaking ability and learning process
