Abstract

This research aims to describe the effect of learning styles on reading achievement of SMP students’ in Banjarnegara, and the effect of language learning strategies on reading achievement of SMP students’ in Banjarnegara. In addition, the other aim is to describe the effect of language learning styles and strategies on reading achievement of SMP students’ in Banjarnegara. The study was quantitative research using an ex-post facto method. The sampling technique used was proportional stratified random sampling technique. Research population was 8701 and the research sample consisted of 368 students of ninth grade of junior high schools in Banjarnegara Regency. The data were collected through an reading achievement test and questionnaires. The validation of test instrument used ITEMAN Version 3.00; and Corrected Item – Total Correlation in SPSS 16.00 program was used for the questionnaire instrument. The test instrument reliability measurement used ITEMAN Version 3.00; and for questionnaires with Cronbach Alpha. The data were analyzed by using regression analyses with SPSS 16.00 for windows. The result of the analysis shows the t-test value is 6.320 and the value of regression effect of learning styles on reading achievement is 0.98 or 9.8%. The result shows that learning styles have significant effect on reading achievement. The learning styles preferences used are extroverted (33.2%), sequential (29.9%), closure oriented (12.5%), open oriented (9%), random (9%), and introverted (6.5%). The result of the analysis also shows t-test value is 7.191 and the value of regression effect of language learning strategies on reading achievement is 0.124 or 12.4%. The result shows that language learning strategies have significant effect on reading achievement. The language learning strategies used are social (31.2%), metacognitive (25%), compensation (16.3%), cognitive (9.5%), memory (9.2%), and affective (8.7%).The result of F – test is 21.648 and significant value is 0,000 with 5% probability indicating that the learning styles and the language learning strategies have significant effects on the reading achievement with 9.2% contribution.
