Abstract

The objective of the study is to design appropriate learning materials of English for mathematics for the fourth grade students of Pilot International Standard School (RSBI) Bantul Manunggal Elementary School in Bantul Regency. The materials are intended to support the teaching and learning process of English for mathematics. This study designed three units of English for mathematics learning materials for the fourth grade students of Pilot International School Bantul Manunggal Elementary School to learn addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The titles of the three units are What are the Totals of Pandu and Feri’s Books?, What is Nine Minus Six?, and The Area of the Tile is Twenty Square Centimeters. The learning materials were designed based on the needs assessment data. This is a development research which included the steps of conducting needs assessment, designing the first draft, evaluating the first draft, revising the first draft, implementing the second draft and evaluating and revising the second draft and the last process was writing the final product. The instruments of the data collection were a questionnaire and observation sheet. The respondents involved in this study were a content and instructional expert, a layout design expert, and 44 students of the fourth grade of Pilot International School Bantul Manunggal Elementary School for the designed materials tryout. The data were collected through questionnaire and observation. The instruments of the data collection were a questionnaire and an observation sheet. The result of the study shows that the designed materials are appropriate for the students as indicated by the mean of the experts’ evaluations and the students’ agreement given on the tryout questionnaire. The mean of content expert evaluation on the material aspect was 4.00 and the lay-out design expert evaluation was 4.60. This means that both of the experts agreed on the appropriateness of the learning materials. Furthermore, the mean of the tryout of unit 1 was 4.45 (very good), unit 2 was 4.50 (very good); and unit 3 was 4.44 (very good). Good learning materials should 1) match with standard and basic competencies of mathematics, 2) provide pictures supporting the learning process, 3) organized from the easy to the difficult level, 4) facilitate the students to communicate and interact with each other in English for mathematics class, 5) consist of individual, pair and group work, and 6) include integrated skills
