Abstract
This research is aimed at (1) analyzing kinds of compensation strategies and (2) describing the utility of compensation strategies represented in the translation. To obtain the objectives, the research employed descriptive qualitative method. The data were 75 results of translation taken from Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University, one of universities which has English education department and located at Batikan street 2, Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta. The units of analysis in this research were sentences, paragraphs, and texts in the translation practice. The data were collected by adopting documentary technique of data collection. Check list of compensation strategies were applied for collecting the data. The researcher analyzed the data using thematic qualitative analysis by categorizing, coding, and interpreting the data. Then the conclusions were drawn for answering the research questions The research reveals two findings. First, the kinds of compensation strategies in the translation employed four among six strategies. They are switching to Indonesian, using circumlocution or synonym, coining words, and using linguistic clues. The students tend to use switching to Indonesian to overcome their limitation of knowledge by looking at the percentage that is 51.27%. Second, the utility of compensation strategies are more employed in the text level than other levels. Finally, it is recommended that compensation strategies are able to assist the students to overcome the limitation of their knowledge in the translation.
