Abstract

There were three aims of this research. They were to investigate (1) the types of morphological errors that were found on students’ English writing at grade IX of SMP Negeri 9 Yogyakarta, (2) the types of syntactical errors that were found in students’ English writing at grade IX of SMP Negeri 9 Yogyakarta, and (3) the sources of error which influence grade IX students of SMP Negeri 1 Yogyakarta producing errors in English writing. This research was a descriptive qualitative study which described the kinds of errors that were produced by the students in English writing and the factors that caused the student to produce those errors. The subject of the study was 77 of the students’ writings and the unit of analysis was the morpheme, word, phrase, and sentence rank. The data were collected through a writing test. The instruments of this research were the researcher and the interview guide. The data were analyzed using the referential method. The results of the research showed that there were 7 kinds of errors which occurred in the morphological level, 6 kinds of errors which occurred in the syntactical level, and 2 major factors causing the errors. (1) The types of morphological errors occurred in the omission (52.16%), the addition (18.10%), and the misformation (29.74%) which included the derivation, inflection, preposition, article, copula be, personal pronoun, and auxiliary. (2) The type of syntactical errors also occurred in the omission (7.81%), the misformation (62.50%), and the misordering (29.69%) which included the passive voice, tense, noun phrase, auxiliary, subject-verb agreement, and determiner. Then, (3) the two major sources of error were the interlingual or first language interference and the intralingual which covered overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application rule, and false concept hypothesis.
