Abstract

This research is aimed at improving the classroom management to support the teaching learning process of English for 10th grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah Ponjong in the academic year of 2012/2013 by implementing various techniques in pair-work. The research was carried out through action research that consisted of two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The steps of the study were planning, actions, observations, and reflections. The actions were conducted in May 2013. The data were obtained from the observation during the implementation of the actions and interview to the English teacher and the X grade students’ of SMA Muhammadiyah Ponjong. The data were in the forms of field notes, observation checklist, interview transcript, and photographs. The validity of the data was gained by applying democratic, outcome, process, catalytic, and dialogic validity. To get the trustworthiness, the researcher used a triangulation technique. It was done by gathering data from different points of view, including the students’ and the teacher’s. The results of the research show that there is improvement of the classroom management in the teaching learning process of English through the use of various techniques in pair-work. The students interacted independently. They could work well with new partners. The students actively joined the discussion in the class. The students were more easily to control by the teacher. The teaching learning process was more conducive. The research findings were also supported by the result of means of the students’ English scores that improved from 40.30 in Cycle I to 55.61 in Cycle II.
