Abstract

This thesis is concerned with topics of conversation in cross-gender interaction in One for the Money movie. This study aims at describing the types and the initiators of conversational topics reflected in the cross-gender interaction in One for the Money movie. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach supported by tables showing the frequency of data. The data were in the form of utterances (words, phrases, clauses, and sentences) uttered by the characters in One for the Money movie. The main instrument of the study was the researcher herself and the secondary instrument was a data sheet. The researcher also triangulated the data to achieve trustworthiness of the data by doing consultations and checking to peers. Using McCarthy’s classification of topics theory, the results show that there are four kinds of conversational topics with several sub-topics in crossgender interaction in the One for the Money movie. They are Person/People (30 times) and Personal Things (24 times) for Person (54 times); Food & Drinks (4 times), Picture (2 twice), Place (7 times), and Job & Money (13 times) for Object/Belonging (26 times); Planning (4 times) and Reporting (2 twice) for Activity (6 times); and Other (15 times) for conversational topics that cannot be categorized into any of those three kinds of conversational topics. The most favorite topic discussed in cross-gender interaction in One for the Money movie is Person. Man most often initiates conversational topic of Person in cross-gender nteraction in One for the Money movie.
