Abstract
This study investigated the use of the reciprocal teaching strategy in the teaching of reading to solve two problems, the students’ low achievement and self-esteem. The study was aimed at improving the achievement and self-esteem of the eleventh grade students of the Multimedia Department of SMKN 1 Pujut, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. This study was classroom action research. The subjects were the eleventh grade students of the Multimedia Department of SMKN 1 Pujut, Central Lombok in the academic year of 2011/2012. The procedure of the study consisted of two steps namely the preliminary study and the action. The preliminary study presented the problems found by the students and the action comprised the steps of the classroom action research. There were three steps conducted in this study, namely planning, action and observation, and reflection. The research instruments used in this study were observation sheets, a test and a questionnaire. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, and testing. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results of the study are as follows. First, the reciprocal teaching strategy can improve the students’ reading achievement. Before the action, the average score of the students’ reading achievement is 41.89 and the average score after the action is 67.60. It increases by 25.71. The results is higher than the school minimum passing grade (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum Sekolah) which is 65. Second, the reciprocal teaching strategy can improve the students’ self-esteem. Before the action, the students’ average score is 65.14 and after the action research, the students’ average score is 80.08. It increases by 14.94. Third, the improvement is also supported by two indicators: it is easier for the students to comprehend the text and the students’ behavior towards themselves becomes more positive, i.e. they are more sociable, more respectful to their friends, more cooperative, more motivated in their study, and more optimistic in facing their future.
