It is aimed at describing theme choice in terms of variation, complexity, and markedness.
The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were in the form of clauses of English, French, and Bahasa Indonesia versions in which the variations ranges from zero to six, and were categorized into low, medium, and high variation scales. With regard to complexity and markedness, the two translation versions were compared. The researcher was the human instrument and the data sheets as secondary instruments. In data collection, this study applied a Simak-Catat and tabulation techniques. The data analysis was conducted through referential method which applied Dividing Key Factor technique and followed by Difference- Related technique. The triangulation technique was used for fulfilling dependability of the data through peer reviews.
It was found that the most prominent variation is zero variation in both T1:T2 (63.08%) and T1:T3 (70.00%). Of the three scales, the low variation is the most inherent and it reaches 81.54% and 90.00% of the total in T1:T2 and T1:T3 respectively. This result shows that both translated texts maintained the flow of information as the original. In terms of the theme complexity, the T2 uses multiple theme less frequently than the T3 does, while the marked theme of T3 is higher than that of the T2. From the analysis, this research draws a conclusion that the contextual factors motivate the variations in terms of intertextuality and situational factors. The translation strategies and different linguistic features of English, French, and Bahasa Indonesia make the variations exist. With regard to the situational factors, the texts show the same Field, Tenor, and Mode. The cultural factors differ to the T1 in terms of honorifics, product, currency, and period of time.Silvi SalsabilPratomo Widodo2015-06-12T03:15:38Z2019-01-29T23:29:36Zhttp://eprints.uny.ac.id/id/eprint/20432This item is in the repository with the URL: http://eprints.uny.ac.id/id/eprint/204322015-06-12T03:15:38ZA TRANSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEXTS IN BAHASA INGGRIS WHEN ENGLISH RINGS THE BELLThis study was conducted to describe Process Types, Participant Functions, and Circumstantial Elements of Transitivity Analysis that characterize in English Texts of an English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris When English Rings the Bell.
