Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode penelitian pengembangan melalui desain ADDIE dan waterfall. Penerapan media pembelajaran virtual reality transmisi otomotif menggunakan pendekatan control group design pretest-posttest. Subyek penelitian sebanyak 156 mahasiswa Program studi Pendidikan Otomotif UNNES dan UNY. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket dan tes kemampuan critical thinking dan problem solving. Validitas instrumen dilakukan dengan rumus Aiken’s-V dengan kriteria ‘tinggi’, sedangkan reliabilitas instrumen dinyatakan reliabel dengan Alpha Cronbach. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif, uji independent samples T tes, uji Paired samples T tes, dan uji Mann- Whitney. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa perancangan media meliputi: pengenalan komponen, pengecekan oli, perawatan transmisi, overhaul, troubleshooting transmisi. Kelayakan media pembelajaran virtual reality transmisi otomotif termasuk dalam kategori sangat layak menurut ahli materi dan ahli media, unjuk kerja media pembelajaran virtual reality transmisi otomotif termasuk dalam kategori sangat baik. Berdasarkan hasil uji Paired Samples, kemampuan critical thinking dan problem solving mahasiswa pada kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol menunjukkan adanya perbedaan yang signifikan. Hasil posttest kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol diketahui ada perbedaan yang signifikan. Uji paired samples T tes diketahui nilai Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) lebih kecil dari taraf signifikansi 0,05 untuk semua mahasiswa baik yang berasal dari UNNES maupun UNY.
