This research was a descriptive qualitative. The sources of the data were novels entitled Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. The data of this research were analyzed in the form of sentences. In this research, the data collected by using observation method (Metode Simak) and writing technique (Teknik Catat). This research instrument was the researcher herself (human instrument). The researcher wanted to read, understand, and identify the love and faithfulness of the main characters in Fifty Shades of Grey and The Notebook. After the data were collected, they were analyzed and interpreted using discourse analysis by Teun A. Van Dijk. Then, conclusion was drawn based on the analysis. The result of this research was as follows. First, Fifty Shades of Grey has two main characters namely Christian as the protagonist and Ana as the antagonist. The characterization of Christian is as follows: hard work, sadist, reserved, jealous, discipline, intimidate and dominant. The characterization of Ana is as follows: emotional, sensual, naive and blushful. The Notebook has two main characters also, namely Noah as the protagonist and Allie as the antagonist. The characterization of Noah is as follows: hard working, religious, kind, and patient. The characterization of Allie is as follows honest, talented, and a strong woman. The type of characterization in these two novels is indirect characterization. Second, main character?s love based on Fifty Shades of Grey and The Notebook such as liking, infatuated love, empty love, romantic love, companionate love, fatuous love, and consummate love. Third, the main character?s faithfulness based on the novel Fifty Shades of Grey and The Notebook such as faithfulness in relationships, faithfulness in higher power, and faithfulness to oneself. Fourth, from the entire contents of the story, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Notebook are good novels, this is proven from the themes developed i.e the struggle of love and faithfulness, effort and hard work. The scheme begins with the story of the characters with a variety of problems, after that conflicts arises until they reach climax and it ends with a touching story. It was completed with the selection of language, words, sentence forms and metaphors that are fairly neat. In terms of social context, the author concluded that the novel was made as an inspiration for new writers or messages for the readers.}, url = {http://eprints.uny.ac.id/67852/} }
