This research was a descriptive qualitative study. The data source was taken from the English and Indonesian translation version of the movie subtitle of The Maze Runner. The unit of analysis in this study consisted of words, phrases, clauses and sentences which contained shifts. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation technique. Field note was used to note the data on the data sheet. In analyzing the data, there were three stages which consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The finding showed that there were 362 data containing shift. All types of shift were applied at a different rate. These were level shift, structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. Structure shift was found as the most frequent and unit shift took second place with an almost similar number. There were four degrees of equivalence, namely optimum translation, near optimum translation, weak translation, and zero translation. Most of the applications of shift were considered to reach optimum and near optimum translation which appeared to show that the translation shift tended to maintain the source language message in the target language. Furthermore, the analysis also demonstrated that a certain number of shift also experienced loss and gain. Loss and gain occurred in the levels of word, phrase and clause. The last, the finding revealed that there were a number of the possible reasons for the occurrence of shift in the translation of The Maze Runner subtitle (1) shift may occur due to obligatory or optional change and (2) shift has a tendency to occur due to the existence of some rules in translating subtitles such as limited time and numbers of words. date: 2019-08-15 date_type: published institution: Program Pascasarjana department: Linguistik Terapan thesis_type: tesis referencetext: Akbari, M.
