Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen semu dengan menggunakan desain penelitian post test only design. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 11 Yogyakarta. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh peserta didik kelas XI MIA se-Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Sampel penelitian peserta didik SMA N 11 Yogyakarta yang ditentukan secara cluster random sampling. Kelas eksperimen diberikan perlakuan dengan model pembelajaran berbasis masalah dan kelas kontrol diberikan perlakuan dengan pendekatan saintifik. Jumlah peserta didik pada kelas eksperimen adalah 30 peserta didik dan kelas kontrol 31 peserta didik. Pengumpulan data menggunakan soal tes, lembar observasi keterampilan proses sains, dan angket efikasi diri. Analisis data menggunakan uji Manova pada taraf signifikansi 5% dan deskriptif kuantitatif.
