The translation of phatic expression was analyzed through the discussion of some aspects, including types, functions, implicatures, and politeness aspect. This research belongs to descriptive-qualitative research. The sources of the data were two novels in both English (source text, ST) and bahasa Indonesia (target text, TT). The data were the characters? dialogues containing phatic expressions. The techniques of data collection was scrutinize method with tapping technique as the basic technique. The said technique was followed by free scrutiny including conversation and note-taking technique. Translational padan method was applied in analyzing the data. The research instrument was the researcher herself. In validating the data, the researcher firstly confirmed it with the related theory. Later, the data were checked by intra-rater, a person who was a master on the topic being discussed, that was linguistics, more precisely phatic. The result of the research shows some points. Firstly, conventionalization phatic expressions dominated the domestication phatic types by 22.38% in ST. From 67 phatic data found in the novel, 41 belonged to conventionalization, while the rest 26 data was desemanticization phatic expression. Yet, after the conventionalization phatic expressions underwent translation process, there were only 32 conventionalization phatic attached in the data. On the other hand, desemanticization phatic expressions skyrocket into 35 data. Secondly, there was no change in function and implicature aspects after the phatic expression was translated.
