The objective of this research are (1) to identify the types of politeness strategies used in A Little Chaos movie, (2) to describe the realization of politeness strategies employed by the main character in A Little Chaos movie, and (3) to explain the factors that influence the use of politeness strategiesby the main character in A Little Chaos movie. This research used descriptive qualitative approach. The key instrument of the research was the researcher herself. The data were in the form of utterances which contain politeness strategies. The data sources were A Little Chaos movie and its transcript. The data were collected by note-taking and then they were classified and analyzed. The trustworthiness was gained by applying triangulation as well as crosschecking with other researchers. The results of the research show three important points. First, there are four types of politeness strategies employed by the main character in A Little Chaos movie: bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. Second, in realizing those strategies, the main character utilizes her own sub-strategies: not minimizing the face threat, claiming common ground, conveying that the speaker and the hearer are cooperators, fulfilling the hearer?s want for something, being conventionally indirect, not presuming or assuming, not coercing the hearer, communicating the speaker?s want to not impinge on the hearer, inviting conversational implicature and being vague or ambiguous. In addition, there are two factors influencing the main character?s preference of the strategies, i.e. payoffs and circumstances. Furthermore, the most frequent strategy goes to positive politeness which is mostly realized in claiming a common ground and highly influenced by the payoffs. This is due to the intention of the speaker to maintain her social interactions with other characters.} }
