"THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING POWER POINT AS MEDIA IN TEACHING\r\nREADING FOR THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP 4 DEPOK\r\nSLEMAN YOGYAKARTA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2012/2013\r\nBy\r\nMita Dwi Astuti\r\n06202244131\r\nABSTRACT\r\nThis study is aimed at (1) describing the reading achievement scores for the\r\nstudents of SMP N 4 Depok Sleman Yogyakarta who are taught by using PowerPoint\r\nmedia and those who are taught by conventional media, and (2) seeking out the\r\nsignificant difference in English reading achievement between the second grade students\r\nof SMP N 4 Depok Sleman Yogyakarta who are taught by using PowerPoint media and\r\nthose who are taught by conventional media.\r\nThis research was quantitative, true experimental research. The population of\r\nthis research covered 144 year-eight students of SMP N 4 Depok Sleman Yogyakarta in\r\nthe year of 2012/2013. This study applied the technique of random sampling. The data\r\nwere obtained by using the print-based, multiple choice reading comprehension test\r\ndeveloped by the researcher. The instruments were tried-out to test the validity and the\r\nreliability. From the try-outs, it was found that 30 items of instrument of the pre-test were\r\nvalid and 30 items of that of post-test were also valid. The data were analyzed by using\r\ndescriptive and inferential analysis techniques. The tests of normality and homogeneity\r\nwere done before the test of hypothesis was administered.\r\nThe data analysis shows that the levels of the students’ reading comprehension\r\nability of the experimental group are categorized as very high. Then, the standard\r\ndeviation (SD) of the pre-test of the experimental group is 2.25061 and that of post-test\r\nof the experimental one is 1.73325. The standard deviation of the post-test (1.73325)\r\ndecreases as being compared with that of the pre-test (2.25061). It means that the\r\nexperimental group becomes homogeneous. Further, the mean of the pre-test is 5.9630\r\nand that of the post-test is 8.2130. So the gain score mean of the experimental group is\r\n2.25. It means that there is a progress from the pre-test to the post-test as much as\r\n99.945%, which is taken from (\r\n). With the use of t-test, there is a\r\nsignificant difference between the students who are taught by using PowerPoint and\r\nthose who are taught by conventional media. The result shows that the value of the\r\nobserved t-test of class VIII which is less than the t-table, i.e., 2.414 ( ) < 67.168 ( )\r\nand the probably value or p (0.214) is higher than the level of significance 5% or 0.05. In\r\naccordance with those findings, the use of PowerPoint media on reading skills is more\r\neffective than that of conventional ones to improve reading comprehension ability."^^ .
