"IMPROVING READING SKILLS THROUGH VARIED AND\r\nSYSTEMATIC REPORTING TASKS FOR THE TENTH GRADE\r\nSTUDENTS OF SMA N I PLERET\r\nEdy Subowo\r\n06202244074\r\nABSTRACT\r\nThe objective of this research study was to improve the students’ reading\r\nskills of class XE of SMA N I Pleret, Bantul. In this research, the researcher\r\nimplemented varied and systematic reporting tasks. Reporting task is task which is\r\ndone by the students after doing the reading activities.\r\nThe research type is action research. The participants of the study were 31\r\nstudents of grade X E of Senior High School of Pleret in the academic year of\r\n2011/2012, the school principal, and the English teacher of grade X E students. The\r\nsteps of this research were reconnaissance, planning, implementation and\r\nobservation, and reflection. The data were collected by observing the teaching\r\nlearning process during the implementation of the action, taking pictures of the\r\nteaching and learning process in the class, interviewing the students of grade X E, and\r\nholding discussions with the English teacher and the school principal. The\r\ninstruments for collecting the data were observation guidelines, interview guidelines,\r\nand digital camera. The data collected were qualitative. To fulfill the validity of the\r\ndata, the researcher follows some criteria of the validity proposed by Burns (1999).\r\nThe research results show that the varied and systematic reporting tasks can\r\nimprove the students’ reading skills of the tenth grade students of SMA N I Pleret,\r\nBantul. Those tasks are essay tasks, reading report, and finding the meaning of words.\r\nThose tasks were given to the students to improve students’ reading skills. Those\r\nskills are skimming, scanning, guessing meaning of difficult words, developing silent\r\ndetails to summarize the text, recognizing the structure of the text, and recognizing\r\ngrammatical word classes. The varied and systematic reporting tasks can also\r\nimprove the students’ discipline in doing the tasks. It was shown that the students did\r\nthe tasks seriously."^^ . "2012-11-29" . . .
