Specifically, it aims at identifying and describing the\r\nsignificant influence of the English National Examination on the actual practice of\r\nEnglish teaching and learning in grade XII of SMAN 2 Bantul.\r\nThis study is descriptive qualitative in nature. The research utilized two\r\ntechniques of data gathering: observations and interviews. The participants\r\nincluded two English teachers and the 12th grade students of SMAN 2 Bantul. The\r\nstudy was conducted from January to March in the academic year of 2009/2010.\r\nThe collected data were in the forms of words, clauses, and sentences derived\r\nfrom field notes and interview transcripts. To have more reliable data, the two\r\nEnglish teachers and some students were randomly selected to be interviewed so\r\nas to cross-check the data collected through observations. To analyze the data, the\r\nresearcher used a qualitative method. The steps to analyze the data were\r\ntranscribing, becoming familiar with the data, coding, presenting, and writing up\r\nthe research project.\r\nThe findings of the study confirm that the English National Examination\r\nhad undoubtedly influenced the English teaching and learning in the specific\r\ncontext of the study. The influence is negative as it made the teachers teach to the\r\ntest, rely heavily on test-related materials, restrict the instructional activities only\r\non test items discussion and analysis, restrict the use of media, devote the second\r\nterm class time to test preparation, and in an extreme case, narrow down the\r\ncurriculum. The results of the study also reveal that teaching materials, teaching\r\nactivities, and exam preparation time were the aspects that mostly affected by the\r\nEnglish National Examination.
