It was a collaborative action research involving the school principal, the English teacher of grade seven, the students of class VII A and a student from English Education department, Yogyakarta State University. The research was conducted in two cycles carried out in seven meetings in total. The data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process, interviewing the students and collaborators, taking photographs, and analyzing the result of students’ writing performance. The data were in the form of interview transcripts, field notes, audio records, and writing scores. The data from the observation and interviews were analyzed qualitatively and the students’ writing scores were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The validity was obtained by applying democratic validity, dialogic validity, catalytic validity, process validity, and outcome validity. The result showed that the students’ writing ability could be improved through the implementation of the Genre based approach. The students’ attitude toward learning English was also improved in a positive way proven by the improvement of their classroom participation. Scores of the students’ writing performance also indicate an improvement in the students’ writing skill. The students’ mean scores gradually increased from 17.56 in the pre-conditional test to 25.67 by the end of Cycle I and to 27.15 by the end of Cycle II.
