"DESIGNING APPROPRIATE ENGLISH MATERIALS\r\nBASED ON GARDNER’S MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES THEORY\r\nFOR GRADE IV STUDENTS OF SD ISLAMIYAH PAKUALAMAN\r\nYOGYAKARTA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2008/2009\r\nBy:\r\nAni Tri Hastanti\r\nNIM. 04202241037\r\nABSTRACT\r\nThe present study attempts to design and characterize a set of appropriate\r\nEnglish materials for Grade IV students of SD Islamiyah Pakualaman Yogyakarta.\r\nThe materials are specially designed based on Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences\r\nTheory. The students’ diversity of intelligence profiles is taken into consideration\r\nin the material design. By applying the language activities and classroom\r\ntechniques based on this theory, the materials are intended to accommodate the\r\nstudents’ needs and interests.\r\nThis study is categorized as Research and Development (R&D). The\r\nrespondents are Grade IV students of SD Islamiyah Pakualaman Yogyakarta in\r\nthe academic year of 2008/2009. The procedure of this research consists of\r\ncollecting information, designing materials, conducting evaluation, and\r\nredesigning materials. Data are collected through classroom observations,\r\ninterviews, and questionnaires. Quantitative data of the questionnaire are analysed\r\nusing the central tendency measure, while the qualitative data of the interview\r\ntranscripts are analyzed using the interpretational analysis technique.\r\nThe final product of this study is a set of English materials entitled\r\nSMILE, Smart with Multiple Intelligences in Learning English. It consists of four\r\nunits. They are Sit down, please, Can I Have a Pen?, I Like Apples, and I Eat a\r\nPlate of Fried Rice. Each unit is developed into three main task stages: 1) Let’s\r\nGo, 2) Let’s Practice, and 3) Let’s Have Fun. Since the designed materials have\r\nfollowed the proper steps of material design and have met the students’ profiles of\r\nmultiple intelligences, thus, they are perceived to have fulfilled the circumstance\r\nof being appropriate. The characteristics of the appropriate English materials are\r\n(1) M-I based, i.e. considering the students’ multiple intelligences development,\r\n(2) authentic, i.e. offering the students the real-life contexts of learning, (3) fun,\r\ni.e. presenting the students with an enjoyable learning experience, (4) interactive,\r\ni.e. involving the students’ active participation, and (5) various, i.e. providing rich\r\nfeatures of the language, tasks, activities, and media. In summary, the currently\r\ndesigned materials are appropriate since they accommodate the students’ learning\r\nand provide space for their multiple intelligences development."^^ .
