%T DESIGNING READING MATERIALS FOR GRADE VIII STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS

%X The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the needs of reading materials for grade VIII students of junior high schools and (2) to design appropriate reading materials for the eighth grade students of junior high schools. 
The type of this study is research and development (R & D). It was conducted through the following steps: needs analysis, writing course grid, materials design, expert judgment, materials revision, and writing the final draft. The collecting data was conducted through observation and interviews.The instruments used in collecting the data were a tape recorder, observation sheets, interview guidelines, video recordings and a photo camera.The qualitative data were analyzed qualitatively. 
In conclusion, the reading materials could be designed through the process of identification, exploration, contextual realization, pedagogical realization and physical production. The materials designed consist of three units. Each unit were designed through four stages. Those are Building the Context, Modelling and Deconstructing the Text, Joint Construction of the Text and Independent Construction of the Text. This study indicated that appropriate reading materials for grade VIII students of junior high schools has the following features. The materials designed cover the students of grade VIII of junior high schools’ needs, kinds and suitable texts, appropriate exercises and activities in tasks, appropriate instructions for use and suitable appearance that involves layout, size, visuals, reproduction, and tape length. The skills in reading as the indicators were taught in the units. The vocabulary list, the characteristics of texts, the tasks, and the grammar zone were designed too. The result of the designed materials was appropriate to grade VIII students of junior high schools after passing all of the process mentioned.
