"This research aims to identify the homosexual identity development of an \r\nEdwardian gentleman named Maurice Hall depicted in a novel entitled Maurice, \r\nand to explain how the identity development helps him confirm his sexual identity \r\nwhile living in a strict heteronormative and homophobic Edwardian England. To \r\nanswer the objectives, this research employed the theory of homosexual identity \r\ndevelopment by Eli Coleman. \r\n This research is qualitative in nature and a descriptive-qualitative method \r\nis used to analyze the data. The main source of this research is a novel entitled \r\nMaurice by E. M. Forster. The data are some expressions related to stages of \r\nhomosexual identity development undergone by Maurice Hall and the way it is \r\nrepresented in the novel. The data analysis was conducted through six steps: \r\nreading and re-reading, noting, identifying, classifying and categorizing, \r\nanalyzing and interpreting, and making interpretation between the description of \r\nthe data and the theory. To obtain trustworthiness, the researcher used peer \r\ndebriefing method. \r\n The findings of this research show that there are five stages of homosexual \r\nidentity development undergone by homosexuals seen through the life of Maurice \r\nHall in his adolescence period, which are pre-coming out, coming out, \r\nexploration, first relationships and integration. The illegality of homosexuality in \r\nEdwardian England affects how Maurice surpasses each stage. The fear of being \r\nprosecuted and losing his place in society results in negative self-esteem in his \r\nearly stages of identity development, indicated by serious mental illness such as \r\ndepression, anxiety disorders, and suicidal thoughts. In the more integrated \r\nidentity, the self-acceptance of his homosexuality helps Maurice to be \r\npsychologically prepared in dealing with social stigmatization."^^ . "2015-04-21" . . .
