TY - THES N2 - This study was action research which aimed at improving the writing skills of the seventh grade students of MTs N Yogyakarta1through tiered activities. The subjects of the research were the students of class VII D. This study was qualitative in nature. The data were collected by observing the teaching learning process, interviewing the students, and distributing the questionnaires. The actions consisted of tiering the level of difficulty, using interesting texts as input, giving more tasks on new vocabulary, giving more tasks on grammar, and giving clearer instructions. The data collected were analyzed by making qualitative descriptions. The students? writing scores were also provided to support the data. The validity of the research was accomplished by adopting five criteria of validity: democratic validity, outcome validity, process validity, catalytic validity and dialogic validity. The result of the study showed that the use of tiered activities was able to enhance students? writing skills. Based on the qualitative data, the students were challenged by the task. Fast learners did not dominate the classroom. Besides, students could develop ideas easily due to the pictures provided. Next, they could gradually write in a proper grammar. In addition, their vocabulary mastery and learning motivation improved. The improvement of their writing skills was also proven by their achievement in the last post-test.
