ABSTRACT

This study aims to explain: 1) Petungan Jawa what is still used in Kertopaten, Wirokerten, Banguntapan, Bantul; 2) what the functions of the Petungan Jawa; and 3) how to use the Petungan Jawa.
This study used a qualitative research method. How to collect the data in this study using participant observation method and in-depth interviews. Tool is the researcher's own research, using a tape recorder, and tools to make notes. How to analyze the data using inductive data analysis techniques. How to validate data by triangulation method, triangulation, and check the data.
The results of this study explains that: 1) there are 9 types petungan Jawa is still used by people in the Kertopaten, Wirokerten, Banguntapan, Bantul, which are petungan in marriage, death anniversary, build a home, moving house, looking for lost items, look for causes of disease and disease drug, traveling, childbirth, and farming; 2) most of this petungan function to search for a good day to do an activity, such as marriage, building a house, moving house and farm. Petungan also serves to locate missing items, look for causes of disease seeking and the disease drug; 3) how to use Petungan Jawa  is largely based on the day of birth or nepton, except for petungan in death ceremony and searching for missed items. From the day of birth, which later will be used to calculate or look for a good day, a good hour and a good way to do something.
